AI search optimization still starts with SEO foundations
AI Overviews, AI Mode and answer engines change how information is assembled, but they do not erase SEO. Google says that existing best practices remain relevant and that its AI features have no additional technical requirements. A page must first be accessible, indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet. No special format can guarantee that a system will select, cite or send traffic to it.
This moves the goal away from finding an “AEO hack” and toward a verifiable chain: the crawler reaches the resource, the engine understands the canonical URL, the content answers a real need and claims are supported by evidence. Generative systems may explore several related queries and sources. A useful page therefore needs to work as a complete document and as a clear source for a specific passage.
Crawling and indexing come before citation
The technical eligibility chain
Confirm that important pages return the right HTTP status, are not blocked by robots.txt or CDN policies and do not carry an accidental noindex. Canonical, hreflang and sitemap signals should agree. Essential text must be present in rendered content rather than available only after a fragile interaction. The title, main heading, language, publication date and author should be understandable without asking a model to infer them.
Crawlable internal links connect guides, services, definitions and case studies. Their purpose is not to distribute keywords mechanically, but to reveal information architecture and authoritative pages. Remove redirect chains, orphans, parameter duplicates and near-identical pages. After publishing, inspect the URL in Search Console and update the sitemap. IndexNow can notify participating engines about additions, updates and removals, but a successful submission does not guarantee indexing or visibility.
Design clear answers that can support a citation
Answer, evidence, scope and consequence
Open each section with an understandable answer to its implied question, then provide evidence and context. Define ambiguous terms, state the market, version or time range behind a figure, and distinguish facts, estimates and opinions. A comparison should disclose its criteria and method. A number needs a source, denominator and date. A concise sentence becomes more reusable when the next paragraph lets a reader verify it.
Citability does not come from unnaturally short sentences or rows of repetitive FAQs. It comes from precision. Use complete names for people, organizations, products and standards before abbreviations; keep terminology consistent across titles, copy and structured data. Link to a primary source instead of an article paraphrasing it. Add original examples, limitations and conditions that prevent an extracted answer from becoming misleading. The document must still reward the person who opens the source.
Demonstrate experience through people-first content
Google recommends helpful, reliable content created primarily for people. For a business, this means publishing what it genuinely knows: tested procedures, aggregated first-party data, explanatory visuals when useful, design decisions, encountered failures and verifiable outcomes. Identify the writer or reviewer, show relevant expertise, explain how information was gathered and state when guidance was last checked.
Using AI during production does not automatically make content poor. Risk appears when automation multiplies pages without value, invents experience or summarizes other sources without an original contribution. Build in factual review, source checking, language editing and editorial accountability. Do not change a date merely to simulate freshness. Update the claims, evidence and instructions, and record material revisions honestly.
Entities, structured data, images and links must agree
Article schema describes authority; it does not manufacture it
The Schema.org Article vocabulary can describe an article and properties such as headline, author, date, image and body. Markup helps machines read explicit relationships, but it does not replace visible content and is not a special schema for earning AI citations. Include only facts present on the page, use consistent canonical URLs and validate JSON-LD whenever the publishing template changes.
Images add value when they demonstrate a process, comparison or result that text cannot convey efficiently. Provide accessible files, nearby context and descriptive alternative text; never trap the only evidence inside an image. Internal links should lead from a definition to deeper detail and from analysis to a relevant solution. Agreement between copy, entities, author, organization and references helps readers establish who is making each claim.
Treat AI crawler access as a governance decision
There is no single AI crawler. For Google Search, Googlebot access also governs eligibility for AI features in Search, while controls such as nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex limit presentation. OpenAI distinguishes OAI-SearchBot, which supports ChatGPT search results, from GPTBot, which relates to content that may be used to train models. The controls are independent and should reflect the organization’s policy.
Check firewalls, bot management and CDNs as well: permitting a user agent in robots.txt has no effect if infrastructure returns 403. Document the decision, restrict access to public areas and periodically review official documentation and IP ranges. Google does not require an llms.txt file for AI Overviews or AI Mode, and that file cannot promise citations elsewhere. It may be a documentation experiment, but it should not displace supported crawling, sitemap, content and preview controls.
Measure visibility and outcomes without invented attribution
In Search Console, track impressions, clicks, CTR, queries and pages under the Web search type, where Google includes traffic from its AI features. Use any dedicated views available to your property without assuming complete coverage. Compare equivalent periods and annotate launches, revisions and technical changes. Then connect clicks with behavior and conversions in analytics, accounting for consent and attribution differences.
Maintain a register of strategic questions and the pages addressing them. For each cluster, measure indexation, impressions for relevant queries, qualified organic visits, leads and assisted conversions. Manually sample AI answers to study coverage and factual gaps, not to create an absolute “share of model” metric. A citation may vary by query, location, time and system; no checklist assures inclusion.
- Fix crawling, canonicalization and indexing blocks before changing editorial formats.
- Publish precise answers backed by primary sources and demonstrable experience.
- Keep visible content, structured data and entity references fully consistent.
- Govern search, training and user-initiated access as separate use cases.
- Evaluate conversions and visit quality, not only observed citations.

Frequently asked questions
Is special SEO required to appear in AI Overviews?
Google requires no special optimization: a page must be crawlable, indexed, snippet-eligible and aligned with standard SEO practices and policies.
What makes content easier to cite?
Precise answers, primary sources, clear entities, methods, dates, limitations and original experience improve verifiability without guaranteeing citation.
Does Article structured data guarantee AI search visibility?
No. It explicitly describes the article and must match the visible page, but it does not replace quality, accessibility or indexing.
Are OAI-SearchBot and GPTBot the same crawler?
No. OpenAI identifies OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT search and GPTBot for content potentially used in model training; their controls are independent.
